These include major construction and development projects where our firm has been engaged to advise on all legal aspects of the project, including corporate structuring, third party contracting (including incorporated or unincorporated joint venture arrangements), project feasibility, equity and debt funding, all construction related activities and contracting (including procurement, employment of consultants, contractor engagement and development funding) and leasing.

Our work highlights over the past year or so have included:

• advising Ngāi Tahu on its proposed $105 million “PPP” joint venture project with Christchurch City Council, for the development and construction of new Christchurch Civic Chambers

• advising Transpower in respect of land rights, acquisitions and other issues around the proposed North Island and South Island transmission grid upgrades

• advising the Crown on a number of Treaty settlements including the larger Waikato River claims and the “Treelords” settlement

• advising Meridian Energy on all aspects of the construction and lease of its new corporate head office on the Wellington waterfront (reported to be one of New Zealand’s most sophisticated “environmentally sustainable” buildings)

• acting for Ngāi Tahu on its joint venture with Lincoln University for the subdivision and development of 117 hectares

• advising Harvey Norman on all property‑related aspects of its New Zealand retail stores acquisition, development and leasing programme

• acting for a New Zealand bank on the financing of a $100 million sale and leaseback transaction


• advising Ministry of Justice on the construction of the new Supreme Court building

• acting for the Crown on the development and design‑build of a new 11,000m2 government entity head office

• providing ongoing advice to Housing New Zealand in relation to the sustainable urban development at Hobsonville

• acting for The Ultimate Care Group in its share acquisition of Oakland Health

• advising a New Zealand bank on the financing of Wellington’s newest high‑rise office development

• acting on a public/private joint venture between a health provider and local trust to provide a health facility

• key advisors to the Unit Titles Act reform process

• advising the Ministry of Fisheries on the settlement of the Crown obligations in relation to aquaculture activities

• providing ownership and development documentation on a large retirement village proposal
